Lisa Smit is a photographer from the Netherlands with a real ability to capture the beauty in the everyday and an evident sense of wanderlust…
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you first got started in photography.
I am a 24-year old Dutch medical student. Taking photographs is my way of expressing myself and my feelings without necessarily having to use words. I have always been fascinated by how photographers can capture emotions in their photos, and have always been taking photographs myself – it just came naturally to me. Since 2009 I grew more into it and started playing around with it more often, documenting the people around me and trying to capture important memories. Some people keep diaries, I prefer to keep my camera with me.
How would you define your style? Are there any recurring themes in your work?
I find it quite hard to define my style; I think it depends mostly on the interpretation of the viewer. My photographs mostly consist of a mix of landscapes, as I love travelling in nature, and the beautiful people and everyday situations that I am surrounded by.

How do you keep challenging yourself and your work? Who or what are your motivators?
I’d like to make my life a big challenge; moving different places, not knowing what is going to happen and what the future will look like. I do not think of taking photographs as a challenge; instead it is a way for me to create a bit of calmness in my brain. I am fascinated by nature and the human body, and inspired by travelling and the people around me. Photography is a way for me to record everything in an honest and intimate way; precious moments, emotions and memories. Recently I have been thinking about starting a little project – merging my fascination for the human body and brain with photography – but I am not really sure if I want to pursue this idea. Perhaps it is something for the future.
What has been the best piece of advice given to you about your photography?
Do not take advice; I do what feels best for me.

What does the year hold in store for you? Are you currently working on any photographic projects that you can tell us about?
This year will be quite exciting; I am busy graduating from med school and becoming a doctor, which takes up quite a fair bit of my time. After that, I am planning on going for a cycling holiday for two months through Scandinavia, and my main goal this year is to move across the world, back to my muse in Australia. Photography-wise, this could all turn out pretty interesting as well…
