Interview with: Rouven Kirchhoff

Rouven Kirchhoff is a portrait photographer based in Emden, Germany. Using familiar settings and only natural light, Rouven is able to capture very relaxed and genuine portraits of his subjects…

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you first got started in photography.
My name is Rouven; I am 32 years old and from Emden, which is a town in Germany near the North Sea. My photography experience started in 2009 when my daughter was born; I was tired of using cheap compact cameras with bad image quality, so I bought myself a DSLR. Soon I realised that my pictures were just the same as before. There were so many buttons on that camera so I started to read more about the photographic technique.
I quickly got more and more interested in photography and started to take pictures every day – of landscapes, flowers and stuff like that. My image quality was getting better and so I tried to give my pictures their own look.
For two years now, I have only been photographing people. After my first shoot with a model, it became like a passion for me. I spend the whole day thinking about photography, about locations, about possible models and images. I go out almost every week for a shoot. Photography has become a big part of my life.

How would you define your photographic style?
Puh! My Style! I think it is strongly influenced by the surroundings. I try to capture that moment and try to let the pictures look natural from the pose. I also love that analog look and so I try to give my pictures the analog look.

Who or what are your main sources of inspiration?
Inspiration is a big thing; I see many pictures on Facebook and Instagram and so it is sometimes hard to see something new, because so many pictures are the same. I love photo books, and I have many different photo books for my inspiration. I love the work of Ben Bernschneider, who is maybe one of my favourite photographers; I love the way he lets the girls look so easy and natural in some way. I also get a lot of inspiration from movies.

Which single image are you most proud of and why?
I think that would be a picture of my children because I love them so much. I don’t really show them online and so maybe the best image is in my living room!

What would be your dream photoshoot?
A cool vintage house, nice models and a lot of cold beer and music. That sounds great to me!

What is next for you? Are you working on any projects that you can tell us about?
I will overhaul my website and I have a project in mind with a good friend; we want to start something creative together.
