Uncoupled is our latest featured folio from Melbourne-based photographer Whitney Arlana. The ways that we connect and fail to connect underpin this work. Since moving from Queensland to Melbourne, Whitney has sought to understand how her new surroundings function. A sense of alienation and loneliness pervades the city streets at night. There’s irony in the fact that, with increasing digital connectivity, we are currently more interconnected than ever before, yet simultaneously more alone. The work is voyeuristic in its tone; shot in the candid style of street photography, the photographer acts as an individual who is seeking intimacy, wandering through the city at night, past other lonely individuals illuminated only by the windows of apartment lobbies and shopfronts. Without permission or posing, the individuals in the frames stand in as a representation of society, illustrating the isolation of the contemporary world.

Enjoy…
