This featured folio comes fom Martin Cannon, a filmmaker based in Wales who, in the last year, was taken by the process of still photography. His current approach is somewhat documentary in its style, keeping a distance from his subject and giving the viewer a glimpse into the environment in which the person is in. He mostly shoots on 35mm or his Fujifilm x100t when he’s skint.
“Photography is becoming something that I’m a lot more active in recently. As a filmmaker, I’m constantly looking at how people interact with each other, and how to capture a feeling or a narrative in a visual language. Photography can do this through a single still image, I think that’s what attracts me most to the medium, and the unexpected nature of it is really exciting too.
I’d like to get braver and shoot subjects closer, I think the human face is always interesting to look at – so maybe that’s where I’ll go to next with my camera. I recently watched a William Klein documentary and can’t help but be inspired by his attitude to creating images; there’s something very raw and unapologetic about his work that is really engaging.”
